A deep-learning biomarker that measures biological age from retinal images can predict chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) risk, according to new research from Korean medical AI company Mediwhale.
The study, published in Clinical & Experimental Ophthalmology in February, evaluated RetiAGE, Mediwhale’s deep-learning algorithm designed to predict biological age from retinal photographs.
Researchers analyzed data from 45,438 UK Biobank participants over seven years and found that individuals with higher RetiAGE scores were 60 percent more likely to develop COPD—even after adjusting for smoking and other risk factors.
